AIST has developed organic materials that melt from solid to liquid with only the light irradiation, without heating, and can be restored to their original solid state. Although photoisomerization takes place in solution, it is thought to rarely occur in crystals. The newly synthesized organic compounds have molecular weight of about 1100-1700 and undergo photoisomerization even in crystals. This is an important discovery concerning the basic concept of the melting phenomenon of matter. The next objective is to explore the possibilities for various applications, including photolithography.
